Halloween 2026 hits different this year!
This year, Halloween lands on a Saturday! Something we haven’t seen since 2020. Which means that this year there are no worries the day of or after, just trick-or-treating and celebrating the spookiest time of year! This also means we need to enjoy it while it lasts. The next time Halloween lands on a Saturday would be 2037, 11 years from now! So there’s no better time than now to enjoy a Halloween weekend.
How did Halloween come to be?
Halloween’s origins go back over 2000 years to the Celtic festival Samhain (pronounced SOW-wen), which celebrated the end of the harvest, the beginning of winter, and the start of the Celtic New Year on November 1st, with feasts and celebrations starting October 31st. Starting roughly around 44 AD, the Romans would trade with Ireland while occupying Britain, leading to an exchange of culture along with goods. After Christianity had spread throughout Europe, Pope Gregory III dedicated November 1st as All Saints’ Day (also known as Hallow’s Day), a feast honoring martyrs and saints. Because of its proximity to Ireland’s Samhain, the feasts merged and were later brought to the US as All Hallows Eve, which became Halloween!
